They say it is better to show someone you love them than to just say it. I agree with this a hundred percent. Although it is important for a person to know you love him or her because you say it, its more important for one to feel it because you show it. There are a lot ways to show just what is inside the heart that beats within. For a man to a woman, even the little things will show he cares, he can comfort her in times of need, he can make sure to remember all the important dates of her and their lives, he can give her flowers just because. Or, he can give her his heart in the most literal and concrete way possible: through a ring shaped like a heart.

In my perspective, a ring is a type of jewelry that has the most symbolic meanings attached to it. In a wedding, for instance, it is the ring that will symbolize two people to be man and wife. The ring is small, and is the most unobtrusive piece of jewelry yet it can be loaded with so much meaning. It can be a symbol of love, of friendship or of commitment. It is a piece of jewelry that can tell so much by simply being worn on the finger, depending in the type of the ring. By the nature of the jewelry, it can say volumes; but it does more so when accompanied by a shape that can speak volumes to the heart.

Heart shaped rings may not be a common ring shape, but they are certainly being catered to by a lot of people. The rings that we know of today are usually in the oblong, round or square shape, and this is one of the reasons why the heart-shaped ring is a lot more special. It veers from the ordinary, and aside from the fact that the shape alone can probably say what you want to say, the one you give it to can boast of its uniqueness.

For perhaps every special occasion, there is a ring appropriate for it. People probably just do not practice the ring-giving every time. There are a variety of types of rings for every special event or endeavor possible. Will the heart-shaped ring suffice for the most popular of these ring-giving moments? Maybe we should explore this.

The engagement ring.
The guy gets down on one knee. The girl knows what words are coming out of his mouth next, and she tries to hold back the tears. The guy opens this little red box, and in it houses one tiny piece of jewelry that asks her what she knows will be asked of her even if the guy had not mouthed the words yet. Sound familiar? Yes, I am talking about that time when the guys ask to marry the girl and she says yes. After that one-word answer starts the engagement, and with the engagement comes the ring. For this very momentous occasion in ones life, the heart shaped ring can certainly do the trick. It says: I am putting out my heart for everyone to see; will you take it?

The promise ring.
The world is full of promises; and big or small, each one of these promises is important. Whether it is a promise of lasting friendship or of commitment, it has been common practice to seal it with a ring called the promise ring. For friendship or commitment, the heart- shaped friendship ring can be a good symbolism.

Rings are symbolic; but why should you stop there? Through heart-shaped rings, let your ring be the literal way of saying my heart is with you.

Ages ago, metamorphic rock began forming a flat-topped hill at the base of Kilimanjaro. It formed inside this hill and the gemstone world has never been the same again. The local people as well as the jewelry industry fell in love with the shades of blue and purple found in them.

Where does it come from?

Unfortunately, there is only one location where this tantalizing gemstone can be found. Mine deposits are located at the base of Kilimanjaro in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania.

As a result, they are quite rare, particularly large stones and stones of exceptional quality. If you can get your hands on a natural stone, don’t hesitate to snatch it up. You will pay for it, but it will be worth it to have this rare gem.

Birthstone for December

This rarely happens, but in 2002 the American Gem Trade Association named it as an official birthstone for December. If you are lucky enough to receive a tanzanite ring for your birthday, take good care of it. The rarity of this stone makes it a great heirloom.

If your 24th wedding anniversary is coming up, drop some hints for a tanzanite and diamond ring. Just like birthstones, anniversaries have special gemstones attached to them. For the 24th, it’s this unique gemstone.

How to care for your gemstone jewelry

This gemstone is more delicate than other popular stones like the ruby or topaz. It rates a 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which means it is fairly soft. An opal rates a 5.

So, never place tanzanite necklaces or other pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner or use harsh chemicals to clean them. Warm water and gentle soap will get the job done. Soak it and then polish it with a soft cloth.

The history and lore

The discovery of this stone occurred in 1967. A Maasai tribesman noticed a twinkling on top of a low flat hill at the base of Kilimanjaro. New York jewelers, Tiffany & Co. found out about this unique blue stone and named it after its country of origin. In 1968, the jeweler began selling tanzanite necklaces, tanzanite earrings and more.

The tribes in this area of Tanzania revered the color blue and only women who bore children could wear it. With the discovery of the beautiful blue shades of tanzanite, the Maasai tribesmen gift their wives with the gem when they have a baby. It honors the mother and protects the child. Maybe it should be made the official gemstone for Mother’s Day.

This gemstone is so unique in its various shades of bluish-purple. It makes an elegant and sophisticated piece of jewelry suitable for all occasions. Even if you weren’t born in December, you can still enjoy the beauty of a tanzanite pendant because this stone truly belongs to everyone. It is rare and it is universal.

The diamond is an emblem of romance and an everlasting asset to its beholder. A diamond is a native crystalline carbon, which is the hardest known mineral to mankind, which is nearly colorless.

When a diamond is transparent and free from flaws it is highly valued as a precious stone, and is used industrially especially as an abrasive, but also as a piece of substance. It is just an allotrope of a common chemical agent, but ever since Emperor Maximilian gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond betrothal ring in 1477, nothing has glittered like the king of gems. The shine is due to the mineral’s refractive power, but Mary probably did not think a lot about that when she showed off her rock at the bridal shower.

The emperor revolutionized the business of getting engaged, setting off a trend that is responsible for much of a thirty-seven billion dollar industry. Credit must also be given to the famous and persistent A Diamond Is Forever marketing campaign invented in 1947 by De Beers, the international diamond conglomerate that recently settled a class-action lawsuit accusing it of monopolizing supplies and fixing prices.

Many diamonds vie for the title of most famous, including the forty-five point fifty-two-carat Hope, which resides at the Smithsonian Institution, the sixty-nine point forty-two-carat Taylor-Burton, which is a pear-shaped rock from Cartier that Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor; and the enormous Cullinan, which is over three thousand carats when it was discovered in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was cut into nine sizable stones, including the Star of Africa, which is a manageable five hundred fifty point two carats and is mounted in the British Royal Scepter and on display in the Tower of London.

Whatever its size, each diamond is completely unique in its own way and each seems to be uniquely valued. Consider a survey conducted by the consulting group NPD, which showed sixty-three thousand people a pair of three-carat diamond stud earrings and asked what they were worth. They were informed that they were from a Wal-Mart store, automatically the participants fixed the value at ninety-three dollars. Later the same diamond was presented to them, but when they were informed that they actually came from Tiffany’s, the value swelled suddenly to over eight hundred dollars.

The anatomy of a diamond should consist of four Cs, because more than fifty years ago, the Carlsbad, California-based Gemological Institute of America developed the International Grading System for diamonds. The four Cs stood for the color, clarity, cut, and carat weight of a diamond. The cut of a diamond is its shape, proportion, symmetry, and polish, which are also known as its make. If a diamond has a good make, then it will be brilliant, fiery, and have scintillation, which means it creates a sense of movement and looks alive.

A truly colorless diamond is rare and those with the least color are the most expensive. Diamonds within the normal color range, usually have hints of yellow or brown, but a diamond with fine color has little or no color that you can see. Some have rare fancy colors such as blue and pink, which are extremely expensive.

The vast majority of diamonds are not perfectly clear, because they have internal and surface irregularities, which are called inclusions and blemishes. Grades of a diamond range from flawless to included. In weight, some diamonds are magic sizes, which means a half-carat, a carat, and so on. There is only a sliver of a difference between a full carat gem and one that weighs in at point ninety-nine carat, but the price can vary significantly.

The increasing number of fracture-filled diamonds that are being offered by many jewelry retailers has raised similar questions for the jewelry consumer when ever they are preparing to purchase a diamond. Fracture-filling, which is also known as a clarity enhancement or less kindly, diamond retreading, is a legitimate process by which disfigured diamonds are being made to appear whole. During the fracture filling process, the blemishes and fractures within a damaged diamond are filled with a glass-like paste which shares the same optical properties and color as the host diamond.

When this process is finished, all the imperfections of the fractured-filled diamond are invisible to an untrained eye, and the visual appearance of the diamond has been greatly improved. In fact, the presence of the fracture-filling paste often can only be detected using gemological instruments. If fully disclosed to the consumer, then the fracture filling is an acceptable treatment for damaged gemstones such as a diamond.

However, problems do arise when the value of a fracture-filled diamond is misrepresented or the impermanence of the fracture-filling paste is not fully disclosed to the consumer. You need to remember that fracture-filled diamonds are actually repaired diamonds, and as a result should cost significantly less than untreated diamonds with the same weight, color, and clarity.

You should protect yourself against treated or misrepresented diamonds by always observing the two important rules. First, when you are purchasing a diamond or precious colored gemstone, be sure to obtain an independent gemological appraisal to assure that the gemstone’s quality and value have been accurately represented. Next, be sure to require the seller to state in writing whether the diamond has been fracture-filled or otherwise treated, because any such treatments should be fully described and their limitations disclosed.

This process was invented in 1982 as an attempt to improve the apparent clarity of a damaged diamonds by filling fractures and fissures with an invisible glass-like paste. Since fractured-filled diamonds are becoming increasingly prevalent in the market place, it is important for the jewelry consumer to keep several facts in mind when shopping for a diamond.

At wholesale, fracture-filled diamonds sell for approximately fifty percent of the cost of a similar untreated diamond. Unfortunately, there are disreputable retailers who have and will misrepresent fractured-filled stones as more valuable untreated diamonds.

At other times, honest, but uninformed jewelers, have unknowingly sold treated diamonds that have been supplied by their wholesalers. In either case, the consumer has been sold a gemstone of lesser value and quality at an inflated cost.

Prior to purchasing any costly gemstone, it is important to have all stones independently examined and appraised. Diamonds are forever, but unfortunately, the current fracture filling processes may be less permanent. Tests by independent gemological laboratories have shown that the fracture-filling material may breakdown during normal jewelry repairs and cleaning, while other tests have shown that some fracture fillers will discolor and become cloudy after several years of exposure to sunlight.

When a treated diamond is purchased, it is critical that any limitations or special care be fully disclosed by the seller, and the manufacturer should fully guarantee, in writing, the fracture-filling process. The best protection for the jewelry consumer is education and the advice of an independent expert.

Yet, curiously enough jewelery has become an art that lies nearest to us all, and follows us wherever we go. There is so much scope for the application of a beautiful design and delicate workmanship, but it is left almost entirely out in the cold. Scarcely any attempt has been made to apply to it the same laws or judge it by the same standards that are attempting to be set up in other things.

All that we ask of our jewelery is that it should be costly and fashionable, because of the time and loving labor of the artist and workman who designed and produced it, but because of the material alone out of which it is made. It is this Philistine reverence for material that has done more than anything else to debase what was once an art to a mere meaningless and ostentatious display.

I know of no sight more depressing to anyone who cares for art than to walk down an important street of shops in one of our big cities, looking at all the jewelry in the jewelers’ windows. From an artistic point of view that is rubbish spread out there to tempt the public taste.

If we could find ourselves by some touch of magic suddenly under the rule of a stern artistic Socialism, where nothing was permitted to be bought or sold that was not either useful or beautiful and were a destroying spirit sent one night through the length and breadth of the land. What a blight next morning would have fallen on the jewelers’ windows and what few things would be left.

But instead, the shop windows are the gage of the public taste, and it is not the tradesman who sells this costly rubbish, nor the manufacturer who has it made. The only one to blame is ourselves, society, and especially the women not only of today, but for the last hundred years or more who have created the demand for this puerile stuff. As a result, they have neglected what might be one of the most efficient means of developing the art-instincts of a nation.

Jewelery has been a favorite form of personal decoration from the earliest times. We know with what skill the Etruscans and Greeks worked in precious metals and that a large part of what is good in our modern jewelery is copied from their designs and from those of other early nations.

The Romans wore it freely as well. The manufacture was extensively encouraged in England in 1685, and it appears as if the fondness for diamonds was greater even then than now, because they were largely used in the ornamentation of rich apparel.
